Coldcut Solid Steel with The Open Mind Collective

In 1988, Solid Steel began as a radio show on Kiss FM (radio station for the London area) hosted by Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More, where they were not only able to play and mix records, but also display their cut-up technique live. The show was known for airing "The Broadest Beats in London" and the two hour show was broadcast on Sunday mornings from 1am to 3am. It was filled by improv, with each DJ taking sets of 30 minutes. They also had guests come into the studio and contribute to the mix, most notably The Orb.

I think that the early to mid-nineties was a great time for ambient music and the show I've included here is a good example. This particular show is guested by The Open Mind Collective who were behind the Telepathic Fish, which was a Sunday daytime ambient chill-out party held in Brixton’s CoolTan.

This show contains very little chat, just two hours of non-stop chilled-out head beats with the commercial breaks edited out. Sit back and enjoy!

Broadcast: Kiss FM, 11th July, 1993

Hi,

This is weird.

In 1993 I was at uni in Leeds and a friend of friend gave me a copy of a tape. It was a recording of this exact show but not the whole thing. It starts during Kraftwerk and there's a bit of the Manasa show on afterwards.

Anyway I loved the tape and over the years I've collected quite a few of the tracks. Beacuse of the poor quality of the tape and the dodgy editing I started to ge the idea of recreating the whole thing from scratch. A bit crazy but it would be nice for me anyway.

So, I got so far but being easily distracted I haven't done anything with the idea until this Sunday - that day of your post.

This is the weird bit. I was suddenly and for no apparent reason compelled to dig the tape out and see how far off complete I was in my mission to get all the tracks. I went through the tape noting down each track and using the scant information provided by the presenter (was this Matt or Jonathon?). I realised I still had a few to go and using the magic of Discogs, Google and YouTube managed to narrow down the last few. Then I stated ordering things. The last couple of days I've ordered three records, I'm bidding on another and a friend is going to get me copies of tracks he has. Last night I managed to figure out which George Carlin comedy LP they used. Cool.

Tonight I decided to try and found out some more about who was actually behind it. Googled Open Mind Collective and I find this!

I'm downloading as I type. The coolest thing is I can now get the first few tracks sorted as well.

I think I can help with the tracklist so I'll get back to you when I've heard the whole thing.

Thankyou.

When I eventually get my mix sorted I'll let you know.

Thanks! Yeah, let me now and also if you can help with the track listing.

I also have another Coldcut with The Open Mind show, but on that one I'm missing some of it and the reception was a little poor during one part. Maybe I'll post that one later as it's still really good.

Hi Steve & Mr B Normal
I saw this today as I was forwarded it by Matt Megatrip Kissinger who is one of the biggest collectors of Solid Steel shows in the world. We are currently excavating the Solid Steel archives as the show is 20 years old this year (you probably know this anyway)
The reason I write is that the first hour of this show was mixed by me and it was the first time I ever appeared on Solid Steel, alongside old DJ partner Mario Aguera as part of the Openmind/Telepathic Fish collective.

This mix has reared it's head a few times over the years and as a result of seeing your tracklist (the original is long lost) I've re-visited it and made some amendments to it so that you can get the correct records. This was mixed totally live on 3 decks and a CD player (the old rack mounted ones) with a few Coldcut jingles being thrown in off of 8 track-style carts by Matt Black (Jon wasn't in the studio for this session).
Mario took over after the Barbarella track, we shared a house at the time and pooled our records when playing out as I was only just out of college and he had a full-time job so could afford to buy more new records than me. Along with Chantal Passamonte (now recording as Mira Calx for Warp) and David Vallade, a graphic designer who has done covers for Clear, Reflective, Worm Interface, Ninja Tune and many more, we did the Telepathic Fish parties. One day i will get a little site together with all the mixes, photos, magazines and flyers I have stored up from those years...

I totally agree with you about the early to mid 90's being a great time for ambient music and many of my early mixes for Solid Steel were of this variety, not completely forsaking some beats though. Thanks for upping this though as the quality is superior to my own D90 cassette and I'm not sure if a DAT recording of this exists. I have plenty more mixes just like this in the archives, some of which will appear on the Solid Steel podcasts over the year and some which I will dig out and up at some point in the future. I have also found several ambient mixes by Coldcut from around this time which have been or will be posted on these blogs.

Hi Kev,

Thanks for the background info and updated tracklisting.

I went to one Telepathic Fish which was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It has always left a lasting impression on me and my friends ever since.

Mixmaster Morris posted a fifty minute mix from one of them on his Myspace a couple of months ago which was good to hear.

Your idea for a site sounds good. I'm sure it will be really popular.

Thanks.

Hi Mr B.Normal

Great post! Cheers for hooking me up with this steel, lovely ambient sounds.
I have had a look around for the MMM Telepathic Fish mix but had no joy. I was wondering if it would be possible to repost it, pretty please??

Thanks
Paddy

Mr. B.Normal said...

No problem. I'll try and post it tomorrow.

steve norgate said...

Hey Kev! Thanks for that and, well everything really ;-)

Yeah, I got hold of Disorientation the other day and realised what they've done with the Bounty Killer's beats.

Tong Poo is on there I think. I've just listened to a clean version of Heaven Taste and there's definitely something added which I reckon must be the start of one of the Tong Poo mixes.

I'll prove it with my recreation hopefully.

steve norgate said...

Slight correction:

Track 18 is Hypnotone - God CPU
and Track 19 is unknown.

Also note that the Hypnotone track is God CPU not God CPU (Ambient) as Matt says on the show.

Steve
I found an old flyer with the image of the record I used for the sound recording spoken word over the Psychic Warriors track. It's called Hear This! featuring Bob Ager and bob Hardcastle on Discourses records. There's a copy here http://www1.gemm.com/item/BOB--AUGER--AND--BOB--HARDCASTLE/HEAR--THIS!/GML667390664/

harbour said...

Thanks, pretty sure track 26 is by Biosphere, not sure if its from Microgravity or Patashnik on Apollo Records, but will dig through old records when I get a chance

harbour said...

Hi again, also track 3 on part two is Banco de Gaia - Shanti, I think the version on Ambient Dub vol 2 on Beyond Records.

Mr. B.Normal said...

Hi Harbour,

Do you mean track 3 on part two on this first Openmind show (either the unknown one or instead of Hypnotone) or on the second show, instead of Psychic Warriors Ov Gaia?

harbour said...

Hi B., sorry for be confusing, the Biosphere one is track 26 on this mix (the July 93 one), between the Sequential & Irresistable Force track.
The Banco De Gaia track is also from this mix and is actually track three on part two of this mix so it would go,Sven Vath, then brief bit of Hypnotone then the Banco De Gaia track.
Got a few old SS tapes of my own, mostly 95/96 I think that I need to transfer at some point too!

Mr. B.Normal said...

Thanks for that, Harbour! Much appreciated!

I've got one more complete Solid Steel show from '93 which maybe I'll post in a week or two.

steve norgate said...

Kev,

Thankyou so much. I was hopefull I'd track that one down but not so quickly. It was also used by Bent on their album from a few yars back. I've got it ordered now from just down the road from me in Leeds as it happens.

Harbour,

Thanks for getting those two tracks run to ground as well. I was thinking Biosphere for that one actually but I forgot to follow it up. A bit of Googling showed that it's Baby Interphase (Remix)(Apollo Records)

Which just leave one unidentified track by reckoning (and excluding the african chants over the Jungle Brothers). Inbetween Albatross and The Prophet, whilst Terrence is still on there's a track. It starts at 2:10 on Albatross and takes up the first 01:10 of the next track.

stevenorgate said...

Ah. No. We have got them all. I didn't realise the intro to The Prophet has that extra bit on the beginning.

So, I've got a few more in the post and I still need to find a copy of The Mr Men at a reasonable price and we're off. Just that African chanting to decide what to do about.

Strictly Kev said...

Steve
I've listened through a load of records that I was playing around the same time as this mix was made and I just cannot find the african chanting track I'm afraid. I thought I knew what record it was but I checked and it wasn't on it. If I find it I'll let you know but don't get your hopes up.

Kev,

I'm just happy you're interested.

I'll think of something to fill the gap.

Thanks

I've recently uploaded a couple of my aforementioned 1996 DJ Food Solid Steel shows on The Mixing Bowl
Here:

& here

So if anyone could help complete those setlists I'd be eternally grateful since there are some tracks I've been looking for for 12years now, I think Strictly Kev is involved in both, hint hint!

Thanks to the Solid Steel crew for keeping these timeless mixes alive.

Does anyone know what's up with the files, though? I've downloaded from the site linked above, but the files seem to have bits of a couple tracks repeating at the end of each one. This is really frustrating!

Mr B - you wait for ages and then 2 come along at once...

Did you know that if you sign up to the weekly @SolidSteelRadio newsletter you receive a download of a vintage show each week too?
http://solidsteel.net/contact
Tomorrow sees an excellent show from Ninja artist Martyn and newcomer Clocolan (whose album 'Nothing Left To Abandon' is astonishing) and if you sign up to the newsletter you also get a download link to one of my first outings on Solid Steel - pre-DJ Food - under the name Openmind.
This is not the same show that I posted on my website last week either - it's a totally new find that's never been reposted before.
