It's been a long time since I've posted one of my own compilations, so now's the time to reverse that:

New Sounds for the Jet-Set is a compilation of groovy cheesy listening tunes from the 60's and 70's similar in vein to the Sound Gallery and In-Flight Entertainment compilations, but with more of a psychedelic edge.

These tunes were mainly all compiled from albums I'd found at the Spiral blog, and I'll be surprised if many of these tunes have been compiled before. So, without further ado, pour yourself a Cinzano Bianco, loosen your cravat, and sit back and enjoy New Sounds for the Jet-Set.

Hoi' Polloi

Thanks to Skeewiff for uploading this nice long lost sunshine pop album. Hoi Polloi only ever privately pressed 500 copies of this album back in 1972 making this album something of a hidden gem. You can find out more about the band here. I believe the original members of the group have since reissued it and you might be able to buy a copy here.

Don't be fooled by the album cover, this is a great album and can be listened to here. There was a glitch with Track 7, so that can be heard here.

Out of the spaghetti western soundtrack compilations I’ve listened to I’ve personally found them to be a bit patchy, so I decided to compile my own.

You won’t find Ennio Morricone's music from the Sergio Leone Clint Eastwood trilogies here or Once Upon a Time in the West because those soundtracks are easily available elsewhere. Instead I’ve compiled the harder to find soundtracks which are equally as good as the music from those four films and these, too, include the trademark hoof beat rhythms, whistling themes, and the use of the human voice as an instrument.

On this compilation I’ve included other scores by Ennio Morricone as well as Luis E. Bacalov, Stelvio Cipriani, Nico Fidenco, and most importantly, Bruno Nicolai.

Bruno Nicolai was a close Morricone associate for many years (conducting numerous Morricone scores) and composed some of the best Spaghetti Western music.

Here is Vibrasonic's 1995 self-titled album. This is 500 micrograms of pure psychedelia of the highest magnitude.

Hailing from East Sussex, England, the rock duo Vibrasonic consists of members Victor K. Fitch (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion) and Simon Paul Jones (guitar, sitar, bass, drums). Their sound incorporates elements of '60s-era pop, psychedelia, garage, and surf into one tasty musical cocktail. The duo first issued several singles in the early '90s ("Don't Leave Me Tired," "Kingsley J," and "If I Were a Rich Man"), before unleashing their self-titled full-length debut in 1995. Record Collector magazine once said that Primal Scream sampled them and tried to rip-off their ideas, but failed miserably as they didn't have the imagination or the know how.

Khudgarz

Okay, I must admit, I’m not a great fan of Indian contemporary music. I’m sure there’s a lot of good music out there, but from what I’ve been exposed to in the Bollywood movies it all sounds pretty much the same. That is, except for one album which I really love. It’s the soundtrack to the 1987 movie Khudgarz, which to me stands out amongst the others.

The songs comprise of nice vocal melodies and what I really like most about the songs are the musical breaks with cooing female choirs, compressed strings, pounding tablas and more catchy melodies.

I visited Mumbai (Bombay) in 1987 when this movie had just come out and the music from it seemed very popular. Everywhere I went I could hear these songs playing and many times I raced through the Mumbai suburb of Bandra with the songs blaring out the back of my auto-rickshaw.

The music was written by Rajesh Roshan, who is a respected Bollywood music composer and was the soundtrack to his brother, Rakesh Roshan’s movie (the movie is good fun, too). It's also worth remembering that this soundtrack was produced at the time when all the instruments were played by real musicians rather than keyboard samples.

Ultra Relaxation Trance (spoken word)

Here is a great audio recording to put you into a hypnotic trance and make you feel relaxed. It’s by Paul McKenna, who some of you might know from his TV career, but according to the Sunday Times is also Britain's best selling non-fiction author on hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming. I’ve heard from people that his ‘Quit Smoking’ CDs are very effective. These and others are available from his official website.

Jah Shaka - New Testaments of Dub Part 1

This is one of my all-time favorite dub reggae albums. It consists of very minimalistic dub with a heavy emphasis on deep bass accompanied by layered synth delays that blend in and out. It’s perfect for testing out your subwoofers.

Incidentally, in the mid-90’s, I attended a few of the Jah Shaka Sound System nights at the Rocket in Holloway Road, London. Shaka would use only one record deck and the sound was pumped out from all four sides of the room through large stacks of speakers each with a public address system horn mounted on the top. The bass was amazing and you could feel each note resonate through different parts of your body. I even witnessed deaf people attend because they could sense the music.

I see he’s still doing nights with his sound system so if you are in the area, I recommend checking it out. There’s info on his website here.

Right from the beginning he [Shaka] was preaching how sound-system was the true medium of the people, capable of passing on vital messages unable to be heard anywhere else.

Cowcube

Here is a great EP from Cowcube. The music is really unique and hard to describe – just think of lots of samples of old Space Invader arcade games. The story of Cowcube is interesting:

Cowcube (a.k.a. Paul Stimpson) made the [John Peel Radio Show] 2000 Festive Fifty with Popping Song. He actually gave his demo to John's son William in a pub in Stowmarket, and it sat on a shelf for a year, until John found it and proclaimed it the best thing he'd heard that year. {Info courtesy of Margrave, p. 390]

From what I vaguely remember this was one of the most requested songs on his show that year and ironically Cowcube never had a recording contract. From what I remember, he was offered one but was asked to tone it down with the samples. Because of this, he refused the deal.

This EP he sold on CD-R directly from his home.

I haven’t heard any more of Cowcube, which is a real shame as he is obviously a unique and talented artist.

The Flashing Blades

Ok, I’m going to be a bit self-indulgent now – here are a couple of songs from the band I was in back in 1992. The band was called The Flashing Blades, after the TV series with the same name, and I played bass guitar. The music was punk/indie and apart from Stepping Stone and The Flashing Blade, which incidentally was a cover of the theme song to the TV series, all the songs here are our own compositions. The last song, Joe The Cleaner, is from 1987 and my earlier band, The Electric Guineafowl, which was basically the same band except for the guitarist.

Hava Narghile: Turkish Rock Music 1966-1975

Similar to the Turkish Delights compilation is this great collection of vintage psychedelic rock music from Turkey. With 22 tracks, spanning the years 1966-1975, this collection is a great introduction to the fanatastic, long-lost Middle Eastern acid rock scene. These bands raved it up in Istanbul nighclubs, blending the Western garage-psych rock of the era with Turkish folk influences (electic fuzz saz!), bellydancing beats, and all manner of "exotic" flourishes. Of the 17 artists on here, only a few names were already known to us, mainly from that aforementioned Turkish Delights lp or as the Turkish entries on the fab Love Peace & Poetry: Asian Psychedelic Music compilation. Hipshakers Vol. 10

If you bought and enjoyed the compilations Le Beat Bespoke Volumes 1 and 2 by the New Untouchables, then you’ll probably enjoy this compilation by New Untouchables head man Rob Bailey. This is Volume 10 of his 10 volume series which he privately sold on cassette tape prior to releasing the CDs. Actually, this volume was the only one of the series which he put out on CD-R. Like the Le Beat Bespoke compilations, it’s a mix of mod, garage, psych, freakbeat, blue-eyed soul, and is very good for any foot–tappin’ party. This is my favorite volume of the series.

The original CD-R only played as two tracks so I’ve split them all up into their individual tracks so as to make it a bit more user-friendly. Sorry about the black and white cover as my copy is a photocopy of a friend’s.

N.B. I see there will soon be a volume 3 of Le Beat Bespoke.

I've been listening to a great mix this past week which I'd downloaded from the Sleazy Listening blog. It's a compilation of music from 70's Italian soft-core porn movies, most notably the Black Emmanuelle series, and Serge Gainsbourg orientated songs as well as a few others thrown in. The whole thing has been very slickly mixed and makes a perfect accompaniment to those more tender moments when you are with your girlfriend. Telepathic Fish

As requested, here is the fifty minute mix from one of the Telepathic Fishes. This was originally posted by Mixmaster Morris on his Myspace, but since then, the link can't be found.

The Telepathic Fish was held irregularly on Sunday afternoon's in the Cooltan Arts Center in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London. This was a squat in the old Unemployment Benefit Office and a popular place for parties at the time.

The Telepathic Fish was very much a chill-out affair, with mattresses strewn around the floor, video projections, and a rising inflating and deflating white thing in the center of the room.

I'm not sure of the date of this recording, although it would have been sometime during 1993. There's no tracklisting either. Enter here and enjoy.

Coldcut Solid Steel with The Open Mind Collective

In 1988, Solid Steel began as a radio show on Kiss FM (radio station for the London area) hosted by Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More, where they were not only able to play and mix records, but also display their cut-up technique live. The show was known for airing "The Broadest Beats in London" and the two hour show was broadcast on Sunday mornings from 1am to 3am. It was filled by improv, with each DJ taking sets of 30 minutes. They also had guests come into the studio and contribute to the mix, most notably The Orb.

I think that the early to mid-nineties was a great time for ambient music and the show I've included here is a good example. This particular show is guested by The Open Mind Collective who were behind the Telepathic Fish, which was a Sunday daytime ambient chill-out party held in Brixton’s CoolTan.

This show contains very little chat, just two hours of non-stop chilled-out head beats with the commercial breaks edited out. Sit back and enjoy!

Vietnam War Pirate Radio Show

I’ve just found this great timepiece from the Vietnam War. It’s an entire pirate radio show broadcast by Dave Rabbit from a whore house in Saigon in January, 1971, and as Dave Rabbit says on his website:

“These recordings contain explicit material, hard acid rock music and comments about the issues of the times which were sex, drugs and rock and roll. These shows were created for the entertainment of the troops that put their lives on the line every day in Vietnam and were part of the huge Anti-War movement which was happening within the military itself against the war in

Vietnam

.”

The show's fascinating and the music is great.

Incredibly Strange Music: Volumes 1 & 2

All the songs here are pretty strange, with 9 of the 13 tracks being instrumentals. The songs with lyrics are comedy songs, with the exception of Kali Bahlu's "A Cosmic Telephone Call", which is a bizarre 11 minute recounting of a telephone conversation she had with Buddha(!). The instrumentals include guitar instrumentals, sound effects, xylophone, out of tune sitar, percussion, Moog, accordion and whistling.

Here’s a two disc comp I made of red-neck country western, swamp music, Las Vegas pump ‘n’ grind, demented garage punk, 50’s trash, greasy soul, demented novelty songs, weirdness, and all interlaced with a healthy dollop of sleazy drive-in movie trailers.

This music was compiled from compilation albums such as Wavy Gravy, Four Hairy Policemen, Cough Mixture For Elvis Impersonators, Psycho Serenade, Bent Batty And B’Noxious, Forbidden City Dog Food as well as a few others.

Alphaville (1965)

Flashing lights, neon numbers and arrows make up the black and white world of Alphaville. Where electricity pylons feed into sub-stations and every scene opens with a flickering light.

Alphaville is a film noir set in the future, but deeply entrenched in an early to mid sixties bleak French city. Nothing is as it seems: loud suspense music booms out sporadically for no apparent reason and scenes open with someone doing something least expected. This is a film where all the rules of cinematography have been turned upside down.

Set in the future, Lemmy Caution has come from the Outlands to Alphaville to capture Dr. Von Braun, the inventor of the Death Ray. Dr. Von Braun is a member of the Nazi style SS organization which runs Alphaville, with the help of a super computer called Alpha-60. The computer’s deep croaking voice booms out sporadically in a surreal loudly over-dubbed way. No one is permitted to think logically, and those that do are executed in the most unusual way. People have now long forgotten what the word ‘why’ means, and are only permitted to you ‘because’.

Lemmy Caution, who along with a cheap instamatic camera, disguises himself as a reporter and tries to infiltrate the ‘organization’. On the way he befriends Dr. Von Braun’s beautiful daughter, one of the many seductive actresses in this unusual picture.

Made by Jean-Luc Godard, this is a very unusual movie where nothing is as it seems. In a small way it reminded me slightly of Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil’, but Alphaville is much more down to earth in a world where everything on the surface is normal, aesthetic and drab. This could have been made on quite a small budget because Goddard only uses what he has around him and on that level too it’s incredibly imaginative, as well as surreal. This would be recommended to any student of film and lovers of atmospheric French movies, as well as those who enjoy breaking the rules of cinema.

Sex and Fury (1973)

As a child Ochô Inoshika witnesses her father, who’s a detective, being murdered by three assailants. Twenty years later Ochô’s past catches up with her when she saves a young man who is being chased after a failed assassination attempt on a Yakuza boss. In the gambling house where she works, she witnesses the execution of one of the gamblers who was caught cheating. While alone with her, in his dieing moments, he asks her to go to one of the other cities to free his sister from indentured labor in a brothel. After arriving in the city and meeting up with the young girl, she comes into contact with the young assassin, two British spies, the Yakusa boss and his wife, and the indentured girl’s boss. As the movie progresses it become clear that all these people have something in common, leading to an explosive finally.

Sex and Fury is Japanese pink film, which features beautiful camera and picture compositions, and is directed by Ochô Inoshika, who is a prolific director within this genre. One stand out scene is where a gang of attackers attack Ochoa whilst she’s stark naked and how she fights back. This one scene is an excellent example of delirious cinema. Beautifully shot in slow motion, Ochô, using a Samurai sword, slices her way through her opponents as snow flakes fall around her. This scene was more or less recreated in Quentin Tarrantino’s Kill Bill. The final fight scene is also impressive in its own way, and the use of cheesy library music or seventies rock should sound out of place in a film set in 1905, but in some way adds to the uniqueness of the whole experience.

One scene though, which translates badly to western tastes, is the one comedy scene where a male student, who’s a friend of the girls, falls onto his behind and then panics because he believes it may be damaged. To check that it is still working, he farts into his hand and then sniffs his hand, and is relieved to find it's still okay.

Being a pink movie, there’s plenty of bare female flesh, including one interesting murder where the heroine uses her naked body covered in poison.

All in all, this is a great revenge movie and a worthy addition to any pink collection.

The Bloodstained Butterfly (1971)

A pretty girl is murdered in a park and a few people witness a man in a hat and raincoat hurriedly leaving the scene. The police are called in and an inch by inch forensic operation takes place. The investigation begins to slow down until one of the witnesses recognizes the man as being the same as a TV presenter. He is questioned and all the clues and evidence fall into place. He appears in court where all the evidence against him is overwhelming. Found guilty, he is sent to prison and that should be the end of the story….but the murders continue!

The Bloodstain Butterfly is well crafted Italian giallo, with nice cinematography and is shot in some beautiful locations. The first half of the movie involves the painstaking investigation and trial of the main suspect. I was just starting to think to myself that this movie’s a bit slow, when out of the blue another murder takes place. This is then followed by yet another. Suddenly, everything which has been presented is thrown into disarray. A number of other possibilities to the murders arise leaving you completely unsure of who could be involved and what is happening

Gore hounds may be a little disappointed with the lack of splatter, but what this move lacks with violence, it definitely makes up with the intricate narrative and style. This is definitely a giallo that’s worth seeing and the link below is for the Italian language version, plus English subtitles.

Spaced-Out in Goa

In the mid-90s I used to go to Goa in India every year and attend their famous trance parties. They always took place in places like the 'Jungle', 'Hilltop' or the famous 'Disco Valley'. They would start around midnight and would continue until about 11am the next day. When the sun came up they could be quite an eye-opener with the many freaks dancing or wobbling through the rising dust as the sun quickly warmed up the dry Indian soil. No half measures were taken at these and at that time there seemed to be a high contingent of British revelers on Ketamine. We would occasionally rest on one of the many Indian tea mats spread out around the edges of the party. These were run by the local women and the Indian chai (tea) was always refreshing, although I never had the appetite to sample the many colorful cakes on offer. We would always make sure we stayed at the party until the very end and at one time we were the very last to leave, even after the sound system and the organizers had gone. We would have stayed longer if it wasn't for the fact that all the Indian beggars were now homing in on us, including the guy with the dancing cow. We would then take a hair-raising motorbike journey back to our room for a quick shower, and then we would spend the rest of the day sipping beers on our favorite part of beach whilst listening to mellow tunes. I haven't participated in anything like that now for about ten years, but I still have fond memories and deep down I still have that hidden urge to repeat it one more time.

At these parties, people were very wary about being filmed, so I was surprised to find this short clip of a New Year's Eve party from 2005. I'm glad to see they're still going strong!

Cambodian 60's Music

I suspect that like the music that is documented in the now seven volume Ethiopiques: The Golden Years of Modern Ethiopian Music, 1969-1975 series on Buda, the music of Cambodian Rocks probably grew out of some kind of night club scene in urban centers like Phnom Penh. Ethiopiques and Cambodian Rocks document thriving Western influenced musics that were squelched by communist takeovers. The lights went out on both scenes in 1975 and in Kampuchea the commies killed the video stars.

There are no band or song names much less any discographical information on the CD. (For a minute I thought this might be some kind of hoax a la John Lurie’s latter day black-face Marvin Pontiac Zip Coon act. Compiler Paul Wheeler’s initials are also the initials of the label Parallel World.) The story goes that Wheeler was on his way to the ancient Cambodian ruins of Angkor when he noticed the bus driver incessantly playing a cassette of this music. Intrigued, Wheeler was later able to hum one of the tunes at a cassette stall and purchased a handful of cassettes. Cambodian friends told him it was a style known as circle dance music. Cambodian Rocks is drawn from these cassettes.

There is no doubt that the musicians of Cambodian Rocks were not only listening to Western rock and R&B but mastering it. Bits of surf, wild R&B, girl-group vocals, garage, post-garage psychedelia, Cuban bongos, and even some pre-punk snarling vocals swirl about often in the same song. One song features a strangled screaming vocal on a cover of the Booker T and the M.G.’s instrumental “Hip-Hug-Her.” There is a long standing tradition in popular Cambodian music of singers teasing their audience during performances and that playfulness is apparent on Cambodian Rocks. There is a knowing self awareness to many of the vocals that anticipates the absurdist tongue-in-cheek irony of so many contemporary Japanese bands. Not only have these musicians absorbed late 60’s Western Rock and R&B their chops are so flawless and assured it’s almost if they are actually mocking the Western models, deconstructing them—in the correct Derridaian sense, thank you—and one uping the sources, more hijacking than parodying.

Despite this virtuosic tomfoolery with Western rock, regional folk styles are in the mix most notably the Thai-Laotian mor-lam whose accents and I-IV-V chord structure merge neatly with rock’s 4/4 beat and blues chord progressions. More.

I’ve been to Cambodia a couple of times and after hearing the original Cambodia Rocks CD I decided to pick up some similar music of my own. I then compiled it on to my own personal CD of 13 tracks which is available here in MP3 format @ 320. At least three of the tracks do appear on other compilation albums, but I don’t believe the others have been compiled. I’ve also included the artwork to my CD which utilizes the original artwork from the Cambodian cassettes. There’s no track listing because it was all written in Khmer. I hope you enjoy it!

Revolution (1968)

Revolution is a documentary about the the 60’s hippie scene in San Francisco. At the center of the movie is pretty blonde Today Malone, who at the age of 20 is living in a hippie commune. She moved from New Mexico to San Francisco to escape police harassment in her home town. She seems to enjoy her new life and changed her name to Today after taking some Owsley acid. She’s taken 23 LSD trips and the camera follows her, presumably on her 24^th. After taking it she is seen sitting with her friends giggling in the commune, splashing around in the sea or giggling in the park.

Around the central subject of Today we meet other characters in Height Ashbury. One leader of a commune based out in the countryside predicts that cyberspace will rule our lives more in the future as well as predicting that we’ll have more leisure time (I’m not sure if everyone would all agree with the last point).

Interspersed throughout the documentary is some great music by the likes of Country Jo and The Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service and one interesting, but very brief clip of the all-girl group Ace of Cups. There are the obligatory psychedelic oil lights and camera zooms in and out of psychedelic posters. Also there is a fair amount of nudity, from the hippie commune in the countryside to an interview with swingers on a beach to a group of naked people doing some performance art infront of some liquid lights.

Towards the end of the movie there is quite a serious discussion with Today and one of her friends on the effects of LSD on human chromosomes and they ponder the probability of giving birth to mongoloide children. This is backed up with a stern warning from a scientist.

I enjoyed this documentary and Today seems like a nice average girl living the hippie life in San Francisco. After watching these types of movies I always wonder whatever happened to these people, and interestingly the director updated this movie with a new interview with Today taken in 1986. Now she is a single mother of two living back in New Mexico (I presume her chromosomes were ok). Because the director was involved in serious car accident, the updated movie wasn’t released until 1996 under the title The Hippie Revolution.

Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973)

In the late Eighties I bought the two trash music compilation albums Wavy Gravy and Four Hair Policeman. These I thought were brilliant. In between the music were radio movie trailers for b-movies I had mostly never heard of before. I thought these albums were great and continued to collect other ones which were in a similar vain. I decided that I wouldn’t mind seeing the original movies and I’ve now since seen quite a few of them. I was glad to recently find Invasion of the Bee Girls available on Emule as a download. I had originally heard the movie trailer to this one on the album Bent Batty & B'noxious and the other title it’s known under, Graveyard Tramps, is also on one of these albums.

It’s a typical early 70s low budget exploitation movie concerning a town where the local male inhabitants are slowly being found dead after having sexual intercourse. As the movie trailer proclaimed “they’ll love the life right out of you” and this they literally did. Who is the woman or women committing these crimes? The first victims all worked for a local scientific research laboratory. Could there be a connection? Hmmm, maybe! Enter our hero, Agent Neil Agar. He is a chiseled jaw guy who can beat up six rapists and not get a hair out of place.

The movie plodded a long until the scene where a new girl is initiated into the bee colony (I don’t want to give too much away), but this scene was actually quite eerie as she stands naked and is coated in this gooey stuff by the other girls. She then stands inside a chamber and bees swarm on to her. I have a soft spot for movies where the evil character’s eyeballs are blank like in the Omega Man where they are totally white and in this movie where they are totally black.

As the murders continue in the town the army is called in to quarantine it. Well, army is probably not the best description. After the small army convoy of trucks is shown, the only soldiers seem to be two guys who are the least likely soldiers you could find. They were probably recruited straight out of a roller disco or something. Eventually these two soldiers are easily over powered by a sexy chick showing her breasts. In fact all the girls in this film strip off at some point. So if you like silly low budget 70’s exploitation then you’ll probably enjoy this movie.

Book Review: Sweet & Savage

Reality TV shows have become the staple bread of TV viewing from police car chases, to natural disasters, to groups of people stuck on tropical islands, but long before these became part of our television culture, there were mondo documentaries or shockumentaries. These documentaries can be traced right back to the early days of cinema, but it wasn’t until Italians Jacopetti and Prosperi’s 1962 seminal Mondo Cane that the genre finally took hold. This landmark documentary consisted of a travelogue of bizarre rituals and practices from the third world as well as the western world. It was tinged with a sense of black humor, but would also leave the viewer feeling unsettled. An example of this is a close-up of the breasts of girls parading to attract American sailors along the French Riviera to cut suddenly to the breast of a New Guinea native suckling an orphan pig. Mondo Cane contained all the elements which would follow in future shockumentaries such as: the bizarre rituals of world cultures and religions; man’s cruelty towards animals; the encroachment of technological ‘development’ onto the ‘natural world’; sex and death in the modern epoch with the combination of visual savagery with audio sweetness. Another notable element in these documentaries is the inclusion of faked scenes leaving the viewer to question the authenticity of the movie and the neutrality of its producers. The Italians were the domineering force in the production of the documentaries and following Mondo Cane these movies became more extreme in their content to eventually contain some of the most shocking images put to film.

This book looks in detail at the different elements in the shockumantary and looks at the key examples of this rather overlooked genre including; Brutes and Savages, with the obviously faked African tribesman being eaten by a crocodile; Mille Peccati… Nesuna Virtù, with fake German painter Kurt Rumbhild who creates paintings by pouring pigment onto his canvasses while his model couples have sex and Magic Nuda, where Yanomamö tribesman mete out an adultery punishment which consists of whacking each other over the head with abrushi canes until one of them falls bleeding and unconscious.

A lot of the book deals with the director of Mondo Cane, Gualtiero Jacopetti, and looks at much of his work. His 1965 movie Africa Addio is one of his movies that are looked at in detail. Three years in the making, Jacopetti traveled more than 130,000 miles across Africa to show the turmoil of the old Africa as it changes to the new. Because of this movie Jacopetti was criticized for delaying an execution so that the camera man could get a better picture. This was subsequently refuted by Jacopotti. Eventually after years of traveling and at times putting his own life in danger Jacopetti decided to settle down and make a new type of documentary. These were historical ones consisting mainly of actors. In these ones the film crew fictitiously traveled back in time to either 17th century France to make a documentary on French author Voltaire in Mondo Candido or to 19^th century America to film the slave trade in Addio Onkel Tom. This last film probably being his most politically incorrect. At the end of the book Jacopotti also contributes an essay on ‘the considerations of the mondo film’.

Also included in this book is a quick overview of the composers of the mondo soundtrack, most notably Riz Ortolani as well as an interview with J G Ballard who is a fan of these movies.

This is a good book if you want to get started in the hair-raising viewing of these movies or if you want to find out more about an area of documentary making which has been regarded as relatively taboo up until now. This book should definitely be a required addition to the very detailed Killing For Culture: Death Film from Shockumentaries to Snuff by David Kerekes and David Slater. Both of these books are published by Headpress.

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion (1972)

The story concerns the beautiful Nami Matsushima (aka Matsu the Scorpion) who has been double crossed by her corrupt cop/mafia boyfriend and sent to a women’s prison. Whilst making an escape attempt she is captured and placed in solitary confinement where she is tortured, but using her cunningness she is able to turn the tables on her tormenter. The prison’s guards know she is too blame, but don’t have the proof, so they try to break her anyway they can. Nami is a strong prisoner and whatever tactic they try to use to make her confess does not work. Eventually her resilience leads to all the other prisoners becoming involved.

Being a ‘women in prison’ movie, it contains all the usual clichés - lesbianism, catfights etc., but this Japanese movie is different. The cinematography is stylish and the artistic direction is amazing leading the viewer to never feel bored. One scene which stands out involves Nami remembering her past with her boyfriend. This is played out like a large stage play with the action moving from one part of the stage to the other with the scenery revolving to create the next scene. It’s a clever ploy and very mesmerizing in what could have been just another women in prison movie. Another scene of significance is when a fellow prison is trying to attack her in the showers and in her fury the prisoner temporarily transforms into a possessed witch.

The prison guards are typically sadistic, but also comedic at other times. One notable moment is the scene in the shower and what happens to a piece of broken glass. I won’t say any more, but will leave you to watch it instead.

For lovers of the female flesh there’s plenty to keep you happy and Meiko Kaji, who plays the heroine, is just perfect and very sexy. She is well known for her lead role in the samurai movie Lady Snowblood

All in all, this is a much better than your average prison flick with some good use of sound and a great catchy title theme. Recommended to connoisseurs of the genre as well as novices. Arty sleaze at it’s best!

Campur Sari: Indonesian Music

Returning to Java in 1999, I discovered that the innovations of Sragen musicians had been taken much further, and a new craze was sweeping Java. This was 'Campur Sari' which means 'mixed elements'. The elements refer to traditional gamelan instruments (drums, gongs, and other percussion instruments) and modern instruments, such as electronic keyboards, small guitars, and percussion instruments from various musics, such as maraccas, tambourines and so forth. Manthou's, a musician from Wonosari, in the province of Yogyakarta, developed this new eclectic style around 1995 and it has since become unbiquitous, at live performances at weddings, circumcisions, and state celebrations, and on television and radio. Manthou's is able to charge as much for one night's performance as a shadow puppeteer. Other troupes charge less, and are providing a new form of competition to shadow plays as the most standard form of entertainment in Java. More

In my first year in Thailand I was working with an interesting Canadian guy who had just arrived from travelling around Indonesia. Whilst on his travels he was sitting in an Internet cafe where the owner was playing a tape of very unusual Indonesian music. When my friend enquired about it the owner kindly gave him the tape as a gift. I was able to make a copy of it which I have posted here. Sorry about the minor imperfections of the recording, but the tape had been played a lot in the shop even before it was given to my friend. Also the cover scan is a black and white photocopy of the original cover - my Canadian friend has long since moved on. I've also tried to name the tracks as correctly as possible, which wasn't easy because they didn't match the track listings on the back. Manthou's was involved in the music on this tape as well as a couple of other singers. The first two tracks you'll hear are fairly standard, but then it proceeds to get quite unusual. Recommended!
